Ardmore Chief Tom Hayden and Lower Merion Police Officer Michael Pleasants Rescue Fire Victim!
By Deputy Chief Blaine Leis
January 30, 2010
Saturday proved to be a busy day for Gladwyne Firefighters. While returning from the big fire in Berwyn, Ardmore, Bryn Mawr and the Gladwyne Cover Up Engine from Penn Wynne were dispatched for a House fire on Ardmore Ave. While Gladwyne Firefighters were responding to the House Fire on Ardmore Ave, Ardmore Chief Tom Hayden (who is also a Gladwyne Firefighter) was reporting that there was people trapped in the house that was on fire. Chief Hayden made his way into the fire and smoke filled house by crawling to the back of the fire building with little visibility. He searched via hand finding the victim lying on a bed in obvious distress. He was able to get the victim to the doorway. At this point he was met by Lower Merion Police Officer Mike Pleasants. The two completed the rescue and the victim was transported to Bryn Mawr Hospital by Narberth Ambulance.
Engine 24 and Engine 24-1 responded in as well and handled the water supply for the fire. Firefighters extinguished the fire quickly. Air 24 also responded to the fire scene as well from Berwyn and filled 22 air cylinders. Ladder 24 was directed to Cover up the west end of the Township from Ardmore's Fire House. Gladwyne Firefighters left the firehouse at 0940 hrs this morning and did not return until just before 1600 hrs (4pm).
Then after dinner Gladwyne Firefighters responded to another reported Building Fire on Righters Mill Road which turned out to be an odor of burning along with Narberth Fire Company. An hour after returning from that call (3rd of the day) we were dispatched to Monk Road for a Carbon Monoxide Alarm. Gladwyne Volunteers logged just under 8 hours of "in service time" today at the four fire calls. THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR VOLUNTEERS WHO RESPONDED!
